Violent and aggressive behaviour

1. De-escalation programme
Designed to help customer-facing teams and store managers handle situations involving angry, aggressive, or potentially violent customers. This training equips them with the skills and confidence needed to manage these situations effectively and stay safe.
- Situational awareness: Develop awareness of what’s going on around you, so you can notice angry customers in your store and take action before the situation escalates.
- Managing an angry customer: Learn the right things to say and do when confronted by an angry customer, to help calm them down and prevent the situation from escalating.
- Staying safe: Gain some strategies to keep yourself safe when you can’t de-escalate a situation, including getting help, getting somewhere safe or asking a customer to leave the store.
- Supporting your team (Managers course): Learn how to best pepare your team members for angry or aggressive customers, and understand how you can support them during and after a confronting event.
2. Psychosocial training
The Psychosocial training modules have been created in partnership with the expert team at Umbrella Wellbeing, with a focus on supporting kaimahi in retail and manufacturing sectors. These short, online courses are designed by organisational psychologists to help you and your team understand what’s going on in your brain and body during times of stress, and offer proven strategies to support recovery – both in aftermath and the long-term.
- Aftermath wellbeing: Looking after your wellbeing in the aftermath.
- Long-term wellbeing: Looking after your wellbeing in the long-term.
Grow cultural understanding in your workplace
We’re pleased to offer a series of free online training modules designed to help you and your team build cultural awareness, strengthen leadership, and support safer, more inclusive workplaces.
The training is delivered in three parts, each building on the last to grow confidence and capability over time.
- Tīmatatanga (the beginning): A simple introduction to Māori history, beliefs and customs, and the practice of mihi.
- Te Kākano (the seed):
- Te Kākano 1. Introduces key Māori words and crucial phrases that enhance health and safety practices using the Noho Te Puku learning method.
- Te Kākano 2. Begins building cultural capability by understanding Kia Tūpato and Te Whare Tapa Whā practices, along with the associated behaviours.
- Te Kākano 3. Enhances cultural responsiveness, using Kia Tūpato and Te Whare Tapa Whā as tools for improving health and safety outcomes.
Introduction to Te Kākano: This video introduces the meaning of Te Kākano and the three learning modules.
- Te Whanake (to rise): Applying Māori values to strengthen your leadership.

HSR learning pathway

Identifying the 4Ds (Dumb, Dangerous, Difficult, Different) helps to spot friction in everyday work before it leads to harm.
Developed in collaboration with Learning Teams Inc., ShopCare is pleased to provide online training modules and downloadable guides to support leaders, health and safety champions, and representatives. These resources will help strengthen frontline conversations and drive meaningful, practical improvement.
The 4Ds help us learn from everyday work by revealing what gets in the way of safe and reliable performance, without blame, shame or judgement of workers who face risks every day.
